For the next three years, we have the opportunity to learn more than ever before about the trek Meriwether Lewis and William Clark took across the wilderness 200 years ago. Being plant-minded, you will probably seek out information about Lewis and Clark plants - the plants they collected and/or wrote about in their journals. There are more than a few books on the subject currently available.
We are commemorating the expedition by denoting with an (L&C), the plants collected and/or written about by Lewis and Clark. As you think about how to incorporate a Lewis and Clark Plant into your site, remember to pick ones that are adapted to your site conditions. While not all the plants in this catalog have the Lewis and Clark notation, all the species we sell were present in Missouri when the expedition came through, if not along the route Lewis and Clark took. In fact, these species had already been in Missouri for thousands of years before Lewis and Clark.
If you want to make a connection between your native plant landscaping and the expedition of 200 years ago, consider the changes that have occurred in the landscapes Lewis and Clark saw. Then speculate on how much these landscapes will change in the next 200 years. Thanks for doing your part to return and maintain native plants in our landscapes. If we work at native landscaping conscientiously enough, our descendents won't have to go to native plant preserves to experience the vegetation of the Lewis and Clark era.
