Septembr is a great time to plant native perennials. Most species have enough growing time left to get well established before hard freeezing weather. A few perennials that go dormant early will wait until next spring to start gowing.
It's possible your location might be short on rain by the first of September. A hedge against dry conditions is to mulch with 1.5 to 2 inches of a fine particle mulch when planting. Follow with a thorough soaking of the plants. Then only water when the soil under the mulch is getting on the dry side. You will be amazed at how well the mulch will keep the moisture in the soil as it also keeps weeds from growing. See our mulching tips on page 4 in the '07 catalog.
